CONTROL Ultimate Edition on GOG stores all save data locally on your computer. If you use the GOG Galaxy client with Cloud Saves enabled, your progress is also automatically synced online.

Backing up your saves ensures you can restore your progress if you reinstall the game, switch PCs, or play offline.

1. Locate Your Save Files

By default, CONTROL Ultimate Edition stores save data in different locations depending on where the game was obtained:

  • GOG (GOG Galaxy or offline install):
    C:\Users\<YourUsername>\Documents\My Games\Control\Saves

  • Epic Games Store / Epic-based installs:
    %LOCALAPPDATA%\Remedy\Control\Default-Epic-User\

  • Steam (if applicable):
    <Steam-folder>\userdata\<your-steam-userid>\870780\remote\

Important Note: Some recent patches or installer variants have changed the user-folder name (for exampleDefault-Generic-User).

If you don’t find saves where expected, check%LOCALAPPDATA%\Remedy\Control\ for folders with names beginning withDefault-. Community reports have shown this behavior after certain patches.

2.  Back Up Your Save Files

  1. Close CONTROL Ultimate Edition and exit GOG Galaxy.

  2. Navigate to the correct save folder above for your platform.

  3. Copy the entire save folder to a safe location (external drive, USB, cloud storage).

  4. Label the backup clearly (for example:Control_SaveBackup_2025-11-04).

3. Restore Your Save Files

  1. Launch the game once, then close it to recreate default folders.

  2. Copy your backed-up files into the appropriate save folder (see corrected paths above).

  3. Replace files if prompted.

  4. Relaunch the game and verify your progress.

Troubleshooting Notes

  • If you used a different installer variant and can’t find the save folder, check %LOCALAPPDATA%\Remedy\Control\ for anyDefault-* user folders and inspect them forsavegame-slot-* files.

  • For GOG Galaxy cloud saves, if cloud sync isn’t showing your saves locally or you suspect cloud save conflicts, use the GOG Cloud Saves management tools or contact GOG Support. See also Review your Cloud Saves to avoid loss of files Guide.

  • For official guidance on backing up cloud saves and how GOG handles cloud sync, see GOG’s Cloud Saves help.

If your save data becomes corrupted or cannot be restored,  contact GOG Support for assistance.
